PHPBB

I am a phpbb fan.

*HEY SPYRES* REMEMBER ME??

I think vb is ugly. Just my own personal opinion. (We are all entitled to one of our own, right?) Well, also, I know someone who has a forum running vb and there is a lot wrong with that particular site. I don't know if it's just that site or what.

phpbb will have a lot of the same features as vb when 2.0 comes out, and it looks better.

phpbb is cheaper, (FREE) while vb is costly. For someone who wants a nice board and doesnt want to pay a lot, then phpbb is the way to go. When 2.0 comes out, I don' t think there is going to be much of a difference between the 2 of them.

Yeah, I remember ya! I think that vb isn't totally ugly, but I'm not too keen on the new "default" icons for it. I have seen some really nice looking vb's, but not $180 worth of nice!

For those wanting a little preview of the upcoming phpBB 2.0 check out this operating alpha.

http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=1&0

It's still fairly early alpha and it's already looking really good. Can't wait to use it when it's available...

vB is only ugly if you don't take the time to match it to your site. Since it's completely customizable, you can make it look however you want, every single template is editable.

Here's my vB --> http://forum.squareternal.com

Go for vB! vB is the best out there no matter who tries to copy them. They have the best support and a nice community. Spent the $85!

I've always liked phpbb...I started using it a long time ago (yes, I chose it over IPB even when IPB was free) and am still using it today. The user community for it is *huge* which means lots of support from the community, the codebase is (relatively) clean, so it's easy to write plugins for it, and the template system saves a lot of time when coding new plugins and editing skins.

I've never run a forum, but it seems to me that there would be a catch with a free program. Like safety, for instance. Is it true that vBulletin is more secure than phpBB?
